For the first time in recorded history, children born in North America today are not expected to live as long or as well as their parents. This startling trend may have its roots in the nutrition of our parents or grandparents. The trend continues through our generation. Truly, the sins of the parents are visited upon their children, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren.

How did we get into this predicament and what can we do to change the trend?

Along with the advances in agriculture that reduced famines and starvation, the farming practices of the last century produced some pretty scary trends. For example, food grown in mineral-depleted soil has fewer nutrients to offer us. Food processed for increased storage is further reduced in nutrients. Flavor-enhancing additives, such as refined sugar, further impose a burden on our system. It is as if we are over-taxing our personal health resources and the deficit spending of this course is being passed on to our children.

Some scientists recognized this disastrous course 100 years ago. General awareness of the importance of nutrition has increased significantly in the past 50 years. However, commercial and other interests have kept the debate suppressed until recently. A landmark article was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) June 19, 2002. It defined the need for nutrients in disease prevention. Though it was met with resistance, this article clearly opened the door for debate while confirming the truth we have known for a century: A body deprived of nutrients and nurturing will be prone to disease, disability and untimely death.

Further scientific exploration into the link between low nutrient reserves, a shortened lifespan, increased disease and unhealthy children was published that same year in the European Journal of Human Genetics. It clearly detailed the link between poor nutrition in a person and the increase in disease in their children and grandchildren.

The root of poor nutrition has erupted into obesity, heart disease, diabetes and other diseases that extend through generations. Habits and practices of 100 years ago are bearing fruit in our children!

Solutions
With this knowledge, the discussion around human nutrition has never been more important. We simply must change our habits if we are to change our destiny. For example, we must select food grown in mineral-rich soil and endorse farming practices that support ecology.

We must also discipline ourselves to take our nutrients every day. By doing this, we increase the opportunity for having healthier children. And, we must give our children their nutrients as well. If we are past childbearing, taking our nutrients daily will improve our health and give us the opportunity to model responsible behavior for our children and grandchildren. Healthier kids mean a healthier family, a healthy community and even a healthier species.

Breast Cancer and Black Cohosh

At least once a week I get a request for information about potential health risks from natural substances. Last week the query concerned the herb, black cohosh, and the condition of breast cancer.

First, let me express my deep concern, sympathy and support for anyone with cancer. It is a horrible disease. I spent six years in cancer research and saw many people tormented by this disease, and many families stressed beyond imagination as they shared in the suffering. The good news is that our research has helped us understand ways of protecting against this disease, and many options for treating it. One effective option for some of the side effects of conventional therapy are biological medicines such as black cohosh and evening primrose oil.

How black cohosh works
Black cohosh is one of many plants that contain nutrients with structures similar to human estrogen. These are called phytoestrogens because they originate with plants instead of animals. Phytoestrogens have been used to relieve hot flashes, night sweats and many other symptoms related to hormone imbalance. They can also be used when cancer therapy creates these symptoms.

Hot flashes are a common side effect of chemotherapy for breast, ovary and prostate cancers. Chemotherapy reduces to a minimum the number of estrogens your body needs. Phytoestrogens work by sitting on an unoccupied estrogen receptor until a valid estrogen arrives. It is kind of like a seat-filler waiting for a paying customer to come along and take the seat. This action of black cohosh relieves some of the symptoms of low estrogen.

Black cohosh does not cause cancer. In dozens of studies from around the world, black cohosh successfully relieved the symptoms associated with low estrogen, including symptoms caused by cancer treatment. Many oncologists have commented that phytoestrogens, such as black cohosh and red clover, may help protect against counterfeit inflammatory estrogens (pseudoestrogens or xenoestrogens) from causing receptor cell inflammation. Receptor inflammation is a major cause of breast and other cancers.

The same can be said of Omega-3 and anti-inflammatory Omega-6 oils, such as fish oil or evening primrose oil. These oils help reduce receptor cell inflammation and may help protect against the formation of early cancer cells.

What CAN cause cancer
We know of many triggers for cancer in certain susceptible people. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) increases a persons chance of getting cancer on a hormone receptor site. However, some people that take these drugs get cancer while others do not. Why is that? What is a common antecedent to cancer formation?

The difference between those that get cancer and those that do not can often be genetic. Certain genes code for a protein that causes hormone receptor inflammation. These genes do not code for disease; they merely code for, or produce, a protein that under certain circumstances creates inflammation. This starts a domino effect that ends in disease.
Insulin is a hormone that often triggers inflammation. A person has higher blood levels of insulin when they are insulin-resistant (IR) and obese. One reason why cancer rates are higher among obese people is because of high levels of insulin. Genetic proteins plus HRT, plus the inflammatory insulin associated with obesity, predispose a person to breast cancer, prostate cancer, endometrial cancer and many other forms of disease. It is very important to keep insulin in proper balance by reducing IR and obesity.

Reduce inflammation, insulin and obesity and you can help reduce many, but not all, cancers. Reduce triggers such as HRT and toxic, counterfeit estrogens and you can further reduce your risk of cancer. Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables, which are full of anti-inflammatory phytoestrogens, to help improve your health. Good health also increases the resources you have to offer to your family, your community and your many life purposes.

Take Control of Your Health

Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables, 5 servings daily for children, 7 for women and 9 for men. Include brassica vegetables, which have been shown to possess anticarcinogenic properties:
Broccoli
Cabbage
Kale
Brussels sprouts
Cauliflower
Increase your intake of soybeans, black cohosh, whole grains, legumes, tempeh and flax seeds. Increase fiber to at least 30 grams per day.
Increase Vitamin D, both through sun exposure and supplementation. Caution: Do not tan and avoid sunburn. Typically, 20 minutes of sun exposure in the early morning is enough to increase your blood levels of Vitamin D without the risk of sunburn.
Exercise for 30 minutes on most days of the week.
Schedule regular appointments with your health care provider.
Implement a plan to achieve your ideal body weight to reduce obesity, insulin resistance and the total amount of inflammatory insulin.

What Is Homocysteine, and Why Should I Care About it?

A: Homocysteine (HCY) is an amino acid, a fraction of protein like a sliver of broken glass. When it gets into your bloodstream in high concentrations it slices the delicate lining of your blood vessels.

When the tissues supplied by these blood vessels lose circulation, they will die. If this happens in your heart it is called a heart attack. If it happens in your brain it is called a stroke, some doctors even prefer the term brain attack.

Homocysteine has been studied in medicine behind the scenes for more than 40 years. Here is what we have found: Excessive levels of HCY have been linked to many serious conditions, from heart attacks and stroke to osteoporosis and Alzheimers disease. We know that low homocysteine equals a low risk of disease. Clearly, this is reason to care about HCY, and there are steps you can take to manage your own levels.

Nutrient supplements can help

If you reduce your HCY levels earlier in life you also reduce your chances of getting a homocysteine-related disease.

According to a noted medical study called NHANES, the risk of disease went up as the HCY levels went up. Diet and lifestyle efforts were able to keep HCY and disease risk low in most people. Another important study of HCY called VISP added the nutrients found in TriVitas HCY Guard to a lifestyle program and found that nutrient supplements could help people avoid illness if they started taking them early in life and consistently over time.

Other studies have shown, however, that if you wait until you have a heart attack or stroke to start taking your supplements and following a healthy lifestyle, you may improve your condition. Arthritis: More Common than the Common Cold

What is the most common medical diagnosis in North America? Arthritis!

Arthritis literally means joint (arthro-) inflammation (-itis). Indeed, there is often inflammation around a diseased joint. But, did you know that arthritis is a disease of dehydration? Yes; long before the joints swell and inflame, the water-rich lining of the joint begins to dry out. That is why most doctors have changed the diagnosis from arthritis to Degenerative Joint Disease. To effectively care for degenerating joints we need to find a way to get fluid, especially water, back into its proper place.

Inflammation
Have you ever put two north pole magnets together? Notice how they repel each other? A similar phenomenon occurs in your joints. Thousands of positively charged proteins called GAGs push each other apart and create a vacuum in your joint space. But nature does not like a vacuum. So your body will fill this space with a nutrient-rich soup made of minerals, fats and water. In degenerative joint disease, GAGs are lost and the vacuum collapses. No water gets in and your joints dry out and become inflamed.

Inflammation occurs when a special cell in your joint bursts and releases acids and histamines. This cell is called a mast cell. When a mast cell is damaged by trauma or toxins, or is weakened by nutrient deficiency or other stress, it pops like a water balloon and its contents flood out to neighboring cells.

Even healthy cells cannot resist this flood of chemicals and they will join in spreading inflammation. Within a short time, all of the joints in a region can become inflamed with arthritis because of dehydration in one joint. Mast cells also exist in your skin. So the area around a diseased joint will become red and warm to the touch.

The solution to this immediate problem is really quite simple.

Replace the nutrients found in the soup of your joints. The most important nutrients to put into your joints are mineral protein complexes. Glucosamine, chondroitin and methyl-sulfonyl methane (MSM) are three good representatives of this family of protein-mineral complexes. Also, basic minerals like magnesium and boron are very important to joint health. These nutrients are pumped in and out of your joints by movement. So, keeping your joints mobile and active is critical.

Stabilize the mast cell so it does not pop. Mast cells are surrounded by healthy fats. Dietary fats from certain fish and nuts can help reduce inflammation. Also, supplemental fats like Perilla seed oil, fish oil and cetyl myristoleate (CMO) create healthy, robust mast cells.

Clean out any debris left over from the inflammation. Finally, you must clean out all of the fractured proteins to prevent more cell damage in the future.
